Besides environment-friendly, bicycle has become a cheap, secure and
convenient transportation. No wonder, many people use bicycle as their
means of transportation. It can be seen from the number of bicycle
communities in big cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta. Therefore,
Indonesian Bicycle Committee (KSI) keeps urging the government to
provide special lane for cyclists in all big cities across Indonesia.
Chairman of KSI, Syahrul Effendi, stated that the committee recommends
a national bicycle day on July 17th. On that day, people are suggested
to use bicycle. At present, KSI has struggled to apply Act No 22/2009
about the safety and security of cyclist.
“We will try to hold Car Free Day in all areas in Indonesia because the
event is proven reducing motor vehicles’ emission,” said Syahrul
Effendi in the inauguration of KSI management in Hotel Sultan, Sunday
The commitment was also supported by Ministry of Environment. KSI asked
people for cycling to reduce global warming effect. "As a social
organization, KSI is hoped to reduce air pollution,” said Syahrul
Effendi who is Mayor of South Jakarta.
Cyclists will get life insurance. “It has become KSI service for Indonesian cyclists,” he added.
Head of KSI committee, Gamawan Fauzi, stated that Act No 22/2009
stipulating that government must protect pedestrian and cyclists’
rights; therefore, regional govt. could provide special space for them.
“Cycling is helpful for environment and transportation, because it
reduces fuel,” Gamawan Fauzi, Minister of Home Affairs, said.
At the event, Gamawan Fauzi inaugurated Syahrul Effendi as Chairman and
Dimas Kinasih as Vice Chairman. Heru Bambang was inaugurated as Head of
Environment Dept., Nizarman Aminuddin as Head of Research and
Technology Dept., and Kamsul Hassan as Head of Information and
