| City Urges Transportation Ministry to Soon Issue ERP-Related RegulationsBERITAJAKARTA.COM — 7/30/2010 5:06:49 PM
The worsening traffic congestion in the capital city has made Jakarta
government urge the Ministry of Transportation to immediately complete
the government regulations related to the electronic road pricing (ERP);
because the implementation of the system, which is believed to be one
solution to overcome the congestion problem, requires the issuance of
the regulations.
Besides ERP, the city government will also optimize Transjakarta bus
service, by conducting route sterilization, planned to begin Monday
(8/2).
Another way to unravel traffic congestion is through the development of
mass rapid transit (MRT) and the loop line railway. However, of the
programs, only the Transjakarta bus service has been running.
Jakarta Capital City Vice Governor Prijanto, quite welcomed the
Transportation Ministry’s invitation to discuss the congestion problem
in the capital. Even, he asked the Directorate General of Railways to be
also involved in the meeting. "We certainly welcome the invitation as
we cannot work alone. Therefore, let`s sit together. Related to the
ongoing process of the loop line railway development, I think it is
necessary to also involve the Directorate General of Railways to discuss
the issue," said Prijanto, Friday (7/30).
Earlier, the Director General of Land Transportation at the Ministry of
Transportation, Soerojo Alimoeso, invited Jakarta government to sit
together to discuss traffic congestion problem in the city. "Thus, we
can ask what they (Jakarta government) want," he said.
Jakarta Capital City Governor Fauzi Bowo explained that the development of
transportation system in Jakarta had been defined in a macro
transportation pattern, in which there is a portion of authority of both
the central government and Jakarta government.
The integration of the authority in macro transportation pattern is
often not intact, such as Transjakarta development. "We develop
Transjakarta fully with our regional budget; with no help from any
party. If there is support from the central government, the Transjakarta
development will certainly be faster," he said.
In addition to the central government, the city government also needs to
coordinate with local governments of the buffer zones such as Banten
and West Java for the macro transportation system, since the users of
private vehicles also come from the regions. "So Jakarta government
needs to coordinate and integrate policies with other regions," he
asserted.
