| City to Review ERP to Overcome Traffic ProblemsBERITAJAKARTA.COM — 7/26/2010 6:37:22 PM
Jakarta capital city government is committed to reducing the problem of
traffic congestion in its area. The city government is now reviewing the
implementation of electronic road pricing (ERP), which has entered the
final discussion, and the restriction on motorcycles in certain areas
during rush hours.
The application of road engineering through the control and regulation
of traffic is not only based on technical factors, but also on a
comprehensive approach related to social and economic problems which are
all contained in the Macro Transportation Pattern (PTM).
"I emphasize that a big city like Jakarta needs development in the
transportation which is the priority agenda. That is no longer
negotiable. Currently, we are now developing Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)
and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)-based mass transportation," said Jakarta
Capital City Governor Fauzi Bowo at City Hall, Jakarta, Monday (7/26).
The construction of the MRT and BRT will be done gradually as the
process needs well-preparation in terms of planning and budget. Another
effort by the city government is performing road sterilization on Jl
Raya Pasar Minggu and Jl Buncit Raya, South Jakarta. Both areas are
known as congestion-prone spots, mainly caused by the existence of many
illegal parking areas there. "The congestion in Pasar Minggu is
potential to
spread to the downtown. This is the thing that we will solve," he
added.
Besides, Jakarta government also plans to set up measures to ease
traffic flow in the area of Semanggi, South Jakarta. So far, the traffic
flow in front of Plaza Semanggi has always become a bottleneck due
to the presence of a toll gate in the area. The assessment on the
matter is now underway, and it is expected the measures generated
afterward will be effective in reducing the traffic problem in that
area.
Fauzi Bowo revealed, he has also asked Jakarta Traffic Police and
Jakarta Transportation Agency to put in order motorcycles taking lanes
at will. The governor does not rule out the possibility of
conducting a study to implement free hours of motorcycles in certain
areas either.
"The growth of motorcycles has reached nearly 900 units per day.
This is very worrying. So, there needs to be certain areas in which
motorcycles are barred to pass through during certain hours. This step
is part of the engineering techniques that we are doing," he explained.
Fauzi asserted that all engineering breakthroughs would soon be applied
while
waiting for the completion of the MRT construction, the development of
BRT, and the construction of road interchanges.
