| North Jakarta to Hold `Car Free Day` This WeekendBERITAJAKARTA.COM — 3/16/2010 3:33:16 PM
In a bid to improve the air quality in its area, North Jakarta Municipal Administration plans to re-hold `Car Free Day` program scheduled this weekend (Sunday, 3/21) on Jl Boulevard Artha Gading and Jl Kelapa Nias Raya.
"We will again carry out `Car Free Day` to be centered on Jl Raya Kelapa Nias or in front of Sport Mall," said Hotman Silaen, the head of North Jakarta environment agency, Tuesday (3/16).
Hotman says, among the aims of `Car Free Day` are; to educate people on the importance of clean air, and to gradually eliminate public’s dependence on private motor vehicles. "Hopefully, public will later switch from using private vehicles to public transport, cycling, or walking," said Hotman Silaen.
The local government also plans for the next program to be held on 8 August 2010, with the first alternative location is on Jl Raya Cilincing, and the second one is on Jl Putra Putri, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, while the following program is scheduled on 14 November 2010 on Jl Danau Sunter Barat.
Hotman added, this year, `Car Free Day` would also be conducted at sub-district level. The schedules are as follows; 18 April on Jl Pluit Karang Utara-Jl Pluit Samudera of Penjaringan sub-district, 23 May on Jl Budi Kemuliaan of Pademangan sub-district, 20 June on Jl Danau Sunter Selatan of Tanjungpriok sub-district, 18 July on JL Boulevard Timur Raya of Kelapagading sub-district, 19 September on Jl Sindang Raya of Koja sub-district, and 17 October on Jl Sungai Landak of Cilincing sub-district.
To enliven Car Free Day, a variety of events such as cycling, healthy heart gymnastics, futsal, bazaar, and music performances will also be held during the program.
