East Jakarta plants 6,200 productive trees

BERITAJAKARTA.COM — 11/28/2009 10:08:51 PM

In order to support Jakarta government’s program in making the city green and healthy, East Jakarta Municipal Administration on Saturday (11/28) planted as many as 6,200 productive trees scattered in ten sub districts. This activity was also part of the celebration of Indonesia tree-planting day which falls on this Saturday.

East Jakarta Mayor Murdhani says this planting activity is one of the government’s concerns to protect the environment. The trees are donations from a number of institutions such as Forestry and Fishery Ministry (3,500 trees), Jakarta government (2,600 trees), and East Jakarta Sub Department for Agriculture and Forestry (100 trees).

“Some 1,100 trees are planted in Jatinegara Indah housing complex in Cakung,” said Murdhani after symbolically planting a number of trees in the area, Saturday (11/28).

The trees planted in the complex area consist of 10 types of rare plants like bisbol, buni, gandaria, jamblang, kepel, lobi-lobi, malaka, menteng, mundu, and nam-nam. Besides, there are also some protective trees such as teak tree which is the symbol of Jatinegara urban village.

The mayor told the heads of sub districts in East Jakarta to have a type of tree characterizing their respective region. "Every region should have its own characteristic, the shape can be obtained from anything, not only from the type of plant," he said.

East Jakarta Sub Department for Agriculture and Forestry head Bayu Sari says throughout 2009 the local government has at least 9,480 trees planted which were also distributed in 10 sub districts. But, according to the government`s appeal of one man, one tree, the number is still considered not enough.

"In fact, East Jakarta government has planted more than 10 thousand trees in total following the subdepartment for City Park that also actively plants trees in East Jakarta area," he explained. According to him, the Agriculture sub department has so far planted 9,480 trees consisting of 3,660 productive trees and 5,820 protective trees.
