| Betawi Wayang Kulit Show in West Jakarta, on SaturdayBERITAJAKARTA.COM — 11/18/2009 6:38:29 PM
To preserve the traditional culture, West Jakarta Municipality on Saturday (11/21) will hold Betawi Wayang Kulit (leather puppet) show. The event will be in collaboration with Betawinese comedians. It will be held in West Jakarta mayor office at 10 p.m.
“This is not the first show held by Sub-dept. of Culture as the act of cultural preservation. It is held in order to commemorate Heroes Day 2009,” I Nyoman Wedhana, Head of West Jakarta Sub-dept. of Culture stated, Wednesday (11/18).
Betawi Wayang Kulit is now almost extinct. We have to preserve it by now. He is convinced that the event will be more interesting than the common puppet show. It is because there will be collaboration with the comedian mixed with Betawi traditional music and songs, such as gambang kromong.
The puppeteer will be Naman. He will tell us about the history of nation’s effort in preserving Betawi traditional culture without ignoring any rules.
The puppet show will tell a story about "Jaka Pinulung/Kumala Brata". Meanwhile, the comedians are Hemalia Putri, Hj Nori, Hj Tonah, Rudi Sipit and Edi Oglek.
Jaka Pinulung was finding his father, Arjuna. Arjuna was fighting for his country. Jaka Pinulung’s family was concerned about Arjuna’s struggle would be disturbed by Jaka Pinulung. Therefore, the family does not allow Pinulung to find Arjuna. Even so, Pinulung keeps finding his father, because he wants to be like his father, a hero.
“You can know more about Pinulung and Arjuna at this 2 hours show,” said Nyoman.
