To support Jakarta government’s program to improve air quality, West Jakarta Administration plans to hold Car Free Day program on Sunday (11/15). The event will be centered at Kota Tua area in Tamansari.
“We will carry out the car free day program on Sunday next week, aiming to improve the air quality in West Jakarta, particularly in Kota Tua area,” said Dulles Manurung from West Jakarta Environmental Management Agency, Monday (11/9).
Dulles says this program will be the fifth held in the municipality since City’s government launched Car Free Day Program.
During this program which is scheduled to be conducted from 6 am to 12 am, Kota Tua area will be closed for motor vehicles. The local government will also close some roads such as Jl Kalibesar Utara, Jl Kalibesar Timur, Jl Kalibesar Barat, Jl Kopi and Jl Poskota.
“Officers on the ground will help divert traffic on the closed roads to some alternative roads to prevent traffic congestion,” he said.
Thousands of participants are expected to join the program. A number of interesting activities such as mass exercise, futsal, and art performance are to be held to enliven the program. “We predict thousands of people will take part in the event,” he added.
The implementation of Car Free Day program in Kota Tua has proven effective to reduce air pollution in the area. Right after the program held in last June, the air quality detection device recorded decreasing amounts of some air pollutants; Carbon Dioxide from 2-3 ppm on usual days, down to 0.4 ppm; Nitrogen Oxide, from 2 ppb to 20 ppb; and dust particles, from 140 microgram to 120 microgram.
