Fire accident is still threatening Jakarta citizens. From January to 4 November 2009, 736 fire accidents have happened, not only making loss of Rp 244 billion, the case has killed 39 and injured 26 people.
The most frequent accidents happen in West Jakarta by 198 cases. The next are South Jakarta by 182 cases, East Jakarta 143 cases, Central Jakarta 100 cases, and North Jakarta 113 cases. As many as 60 percent of fire accidents are caused by short electricity circuit. This number will rise up to next December because the society awareness in anticipating the fire accident is still low.
Jakarta has some overpopulated areas. As many as 55 out of 267 urban villages are sensitive with fire accident; 10 urban villages in North Jakarta, 12 in West Jakarta, 13 South Jakarta, 11 in East Jakarta, and 9 in Central Jakarta.
Paimin Napitupulu for Jakarta Dept. of Fire Service and Calamity Tackling explained, most of the fire accidents happened in overpopulated areas. The last accidents was in Penjaringan urban village, North Jakarta on September 27. “Below standard cables will cause short circuit electricity. It must be fixed up,” he said, Thursday (11/5).
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo instructed the agency to make a coordination with PLN such as in holding electricity inspection. “The inspection has been done in West Jakarta by involving related units because most of fire accidents happened in West Jakarta,” he added.
