No more street vendors on Jalan Sabang

BERITAJAKARTA.COM — 11/2/2009 4:14:11 PM

Jalan Sabang or Sabang Street in Central Jakarta is renowned for its variety of culinary, particularly at night. However, starting 1 November 2009, there has been no more street vendors selling food along the street.

The new banning regulation is aimed at making the area more orderly.

“We have issued circulars stating from 1 November 2009, there is no street vendor allowed doing business along the street,” said Riyanto, Kebonsirih urban village head, Central Jakarta, Monday (11/2).

Riyanto says the vendors will be relocated to a new location in Kampung Lima area. He admits that some of the street vendors are not willing to be resettled to Kampung Lima.

“We have tried to find the solution by providing a new location, but it is up to them,” said Riyanto, adding that there are hundreds of street vendors to be relocated to Kampung Lima.

To prevent the street vendors from coming back, the local authority deploys around 15 to 17 public order officers to guard Jalan Sabang.

Central Jakarta Sub Department for Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade head Johan Effendi says his side is currently preparing other locations besides Kampung Lima for relocation. “We have provided alternative locations, one of them is in Palmerah area,” said Johan.
