In addition to having prepared as many as 38 thousand personnel, Jakarta Capital City Government has allocated budget of Rp 40 billion dedicated to flood handling measures.
Jakarta Capital City Administration Secretary Muhayat says Jakarta is ready to deal with flood disaster which is likely to come during rainy season. Jakarta has now used modern methods and technologies to handle flood; one of them is early warning system (EWS) which applies short message service (SMS) to deliver information related to flood threat.
Jakarta has also prepared 150 rubber boats from public order police squad (Satpol PP), 206 rubber boats from Jakarta Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (Satkorlak), 242 public kitchens, 162 tents, 442 four wheel vehicles, 4 helicopters, 160 CCTV, 1 bus from Jakarta Satkorlak, and 1 server of weather decimation database.
“The fund is a reserve fund. It will not be used if the situation goes normally because the costs are covered with funds allocated in every working unit,” said Muhayat at City Hall, Jakarta, Tuesday (10/27).
Muhayat; who is also a former Central Jakarta Mayor; calls on all working units to immediately do their responsibilities as flood comes, so that all efforts can generate optimum results.
The reserve fund will only be used if the situation is considered urgent. Jakarta government also plans to allocate a similar budget for next y ear. “We must improve our awareness to deal with flood disaster. Coordination among working units have to be also built well,” he added.
In the mean time, Jakarta Capital City Vice Governor Prijanto said “all parties including officers, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), and public must be all ready, because the readiness will bring about tranquility among people".
Prijanto asks the residents, particularly those living along riverbank, to be more aware of the threat of flood disaster. The people must not litter the rivers; instead, they should clear the rivers from garbage. “Such a measure can prevent the rivers from overflowing as hard rains hit the areas,” he said.
Data from Jakarta Satkorlak shows there are around 99 locations in the capital prone to flood. The details are; 8 locations in Central Jakarta, 27 in North Jakarta, 31 in West Jakarta, 10 in South Jakarta, and 21 in East Jakarta. As an early anticipation, Jakarta Satkorlak and Jakarta Department of Public Works have made a prediction of water travel time.
