BERITAJAKARTA.COM — 10/22/2009 7:42:06 PM

As part of its efforts for environmental protection, Jakarta Capital City Administration will hold Car Free Day program again on Sunday (10/25). The program will cover road along Sudirman-Thamrin main thoroughfares, Central Jakarta.

The program will be featured with a session of osteoporosis exercise which is directly opened by the newly -installed Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih. Around 10 thousand participants are expected to join the exercise.

During the Car Free Day program, the two main thoroughfares will be closed from 6 am to 12 am.

In addition to the exercise, the Car Free Day program will also be filled with an activity of riding bicycle involving an estimated 1,200 participants. The event is organized by Indonesian Hearth Foundation. Another event which is also among the agenda is sprint competition held by Indonesian Cancer Foundation. Around 800 people have been registered joining the competition. All the events will be centered in front of Hotel Indonesia-Kempinsky.

“Therefore, I call on public taking their personal vehicles not to pass through the area,” said Peni Susanti, Head of Jakarta Environmental Management Agency (BPLHD), adding that the highlights of the Car Free Day program are air quality measurement and socialization to public.

The Car Free Day Program is a routine agenda scheduled twice a month in Jakarta; the last week of the month held on two main thoroughfares (Jl Sudirman and Thamrin), and the second week of the month run in every municipalities.

Based on the air quality evaluation in the areas in which the program was held in 2008, the program has shown a favorable income. It can be seen from significant decreases of concentrations of air pollutants; dust (PM-10) by 34 percent, Carbon Monoxide (CO) by 67 percent, and Nitrogen Monoxide by 80 percent. “Those three parameters are primary pollutants generated from the emission of motor vehicles,” said Peni.
