Jakartans Appealed to Wear `Kebaya Encim and Koko` on Jakarta Anniversary DayBERITAJAKARTA.COM — 17/05/2010 21:49:17
In the celebration of Jakarta capital city’s 483rd anniversary on June 22, the city government appeals to all Jakarta citizens to wear betawi traditional clothes koko for men and kebaya encim for women during the anniversary celebration. The city government also plans to hold 62 events to enliven the birth celebration of Jakarta capital city.
In addition to the appeal, Jakarta government also requires all its civil servants (PNS) to wear such clothes during the anniversary day.
"For the civil servants, it is a must; but it is only an appeal for Jakarta residents, as a form of sense of belonging for the city," said Jakarta Capital City Governor Fauzi Bowo, after receiving reports from the Economic and Administrative Assistant as the Chairman of the celebration committee of the City’s 483rd Anniversary at City Hall, Jakarta, Monday (5/17).
"This is as a token of appreciation to the city of Jakarta. As an expression of thanks to Jakarta which already provides many challenges as well as much enjoyment,” added Fauzi Bowo.
Fauzi Bowo says koko and kebaya are Betawi traditional clothes which is the typical of Jakarta residents. "This is our tradition here," added Fauzi Bowo.
The 62 activities are divided into three categories namely, 17 activities of diversity, 32 activities of service city, and 13 environmental friendly activities. The all activities will be held throughout June. The declaration marking the commencement of the activities is slated to be conducted at Fatahillah Museum on 30 May.
Fauzi Bowo, who is a Former Head of Jakarta Tourism Agency, disclosed that the city had allocated a total budget of Rp 500 million for the activities. The amount is lower than that of previous years.
"For activities of Betawi culture, we invite all Betawi culture communities to become our partners. To clean the river, we invite the Community of Clean Ciliwung," he explained.
Besides activities of services, entertainment, and culture; Jakarta government also continues to hold sports events such as the international running-race (Jakarta 10 K) and swimming competition plying islands in Kepulauan Seribu regency. "That`s a unique race," stated Fauzi Bowo.
Just like in previous years; various social activities, such as blood donation, free medical service, Flower Festival in Rawabelong, and mass wedding for 1,000 thousand couples from poor families will also mark the celebration of Jakarta anniversary this year.
